Endocrine System
The endocrine system consists of organs and glands that manufacture hormones and distribute them throughout the body via blood. This includes the adrenal glands, thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. The herbs below are organized by how they are traditionally used to support this system.
Adrenal Gland Support
- Licorice — Traditionally used to support adrenal gland function. Also used for bronchitis, cough, ulcers, and gastritis.
- Eleuthero (Siberian Ginseng) — An excellent adaptogen, easy to take as a decoction or tincture to help balance stress hormones. Traditionally used to support adrenal function and increase energy.
- Ashwagandha — An adaptogen used in Ayurveda to support the adrenals, reduce cortisol, and help the body manage physical and psychological stress.
- Rhodiola — Traditionally used for stress management, fatigue reduction, and anxiety relief. A well-studied adaptogen for adrenal and nervous system support.
Hormonal Balance
- Chaste Tree (Vitex) — Traditionally used to reduce PMS symptoms including breast pain, moodiness, and headaches. May help rebalance estrogen and progesterone levels.
- Shatavari — An Ayurvedic herb used to support the reproductive and endocrine systems, particularly for women's hormonal health.
- Maca Root — Traditionally used in the Andes for energy, hormonal support, and reproductive health in both men and women.
- Wild Yam — Traditionally used for hormonal support and menopausal symptoms.
