Steam Inhalation
Steam inhalation uses the volatile compounds in essential oils, carried on water vapor directly into the airways. It's a straightforward preparation for respiratory congestion, sinus pressure, and bronchial support. All you need is a saucepan, water, a towel, and an essential oil suited to the respiratory system.
Materials Needed
- Saucepan
- Water
- Essential oil of choice
- Towel
Instructions
- Fill saucepan about halfway with water and bring to a boil.
- Remove saucepan from heat source.
- Add essential oil to the water.
- Lean over the saucepan and cover your head with the towel, trapping and inhaling the steam. Keep enough distance that the steam feels warm, not scalding.
Essential Oils for Steam Inhalation
These oils are traditionally used to support the respiratory system through inhalation. Use 3 to 5 drops per bowl of steaming water:
- Eucalyptus: The most widely used steam inhalation oil; strongly antimicrobial with a clearing effect on the airways; traditional for congestion and bronchial support
- Peppermint: Menthol content creates a strong cooling, opening sensation in the sinuses and airways
- Rosemary: Antimicrobial and stimulating; traditional for respiratory and sinus congestion
- Thyme: High in thymol, a well-documented antimicrobial compound; used for bronchial and lung support
- Lavender: Calming and antimicrobial; a gentler option suited to children or those with sensitive airways
- Frankincense: Anti-inflammatory; traditional use includes respiratory support and deeper breathing
