Onions For Cold And Flu
Much hype is out there about garlic, but onions are just as powerful. They contain high amounts of vitamin c and like garlic, they also have high amounts of sulphuric compounds. There are many stories about placing onion slices in your socks or simply just putting an onion in your room when you are sick can help. While I haven't personally tried these methods, here are a couple that have tried and found effective, particularly for chest congestion.
1. Onion Poultice. Chop an onion and place it in a pan of water. Simmer until it's somewhat translucent. Take a clean cloth and with a slotted spoon, take the onion pieces out of the pan and place on the cloth. Wrap up the onion in the cloth and place on your chest. Make sure it's as hot as possible, but using caution as to not burn yourself. To keep in the warmth, you may want to place another towel over it. Let it sit for 15-20 mins. You can do an onion poultice 2-3 times daily while symptoms persist. For a video demonstration how to make an onion poultice, click here.
2. Onion Syrup. Chop an onion and place it in a clean jar. You can also add garlic if desired. Cover the onion with honey and place a lid on the jar and let sit for 2-3 hours. Strain and take 1 tsp every 2-3 hours while symptoms persist. You can also ingest the onion if desired. You can make a larger amount and store it in the refrigerator, but I have found it most effective to make fresh as needed.
There are many simple, natural remedies that our grandparents used to use that have been lost along the way. If you are feeling ill, try the above methods and perhaps a bowl of onion soup!
