Lucky Herbs: Luck of the Irish

Luck of the Irish

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and while this day originally celebrated the arrival of Christianity, it has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture around the world. The ‘luck of the Irish’ has its origins in America, referring to many of the successful gold miners being of Irish descent.

Four-leaf clovers have been a symbol of luck for centuries. Finding a four-leaf clover is rare and due to its rarity, it has held special meaning throughout the ages. Ancient Druids believed it brought luck and protection, Christianity associates the three-leaf clover with the Holy Trinity and the fourth leaf of the rare clover as a symbol of God’s grace. In the Middle Ages it was believed to bring good luck and prosperity while protecting against evil forces. Even through modern day, it still has remained a symbol of good luck and fortune. If you are lucky enough to find a four-leaf clover you can use it as a talisman and keep with you or place in your home to bring good luck, good fortune, and protection.

If you haven’t been able to find a four-leaf clover, you can harness the luck of the Irish with Irish moss. You can add Irish moss to a mojo bag for good luck and success. If you own a business, sprinkle some Irish moss around the entrances to draw more customers and increase business. You can also add it to floor washes and spiritual baths. Irish moss is a sea moss, which means it is rich in nutrients and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, and iodine.

Cloves are also used for luck. Add cloves to mojo bags, wash water, spiritual baths, or you can dress candles with clove oil or press the clove into the candle itself for work to bring good luck, prosperity, and good fortune to you.
